The alloy 20 tube, also known as Carpenter 20 tuberia, is an austenitic nickel-iron-chromium alloy that was developed for maximum resistance to attack by acids, specifically oil of vitriol. This super-alloy it has
excellent resistance to general corrosion, pitting, and crack corrosion
in chemicals containing chlorides, sulfuric, phosphoric and nitric
acids. It also contains niobium for stabilization against sensitization
and resultant intergranular corrosion. Carpenter 20 combines excellent
corrosion resistance, high mechanical properties and simple fabrication. Although originally designed for use in industries related to sulfuric acid, alloy 20 seamless tubing is now employed in a wide variety of industries including chemistry, food, pharmaceutical, and plastics. in addition, this super alloy is used in heat exchangers, mixing tanks, cleaning equipment and treatment of bath for metals and pipes.
There has been a very long debate to decide if the Carpenter 20 tubing could be a chrome steel or a nickel alloy, because the amount of nickel is at the limit where it's defined if it's one or the other.
